sell without the cringe
thug rich no

This morning, I was ambushed. Not by a customer, not by a competitor—but by a vertical video ad in my Facebook feed.

It was for a local garage floor coating business. The ad blasted out with a flurry of images: a cracked concrete floor, some grinder action, a few blurry repair shots, and then a final blitz of angled glamour pics of the finished floor.

All of it was put to an overly loud piece of rap music (I f*****g hate rap).

There was no voiceover. No explanation of what the viewer was seeing. No idea why any of this should matter to a homeowner. And at the end? Just a logo. No call to action. No way to connect. Nothing.

And you know what? The guy who paid for that ad probably thinks it was brilliant. He probably thinks people will see it and just know to call him. That the work will sell itself. That he’s being edgy and cool.

He’s not. He’s bleeding leads.

People Don’t Want a Show. They Want a Solution.

Let me make this real simple. People don’t care about your production value. They care about THEIR problems.

If your ad doesn’t instantly answer three questions:

  1. What am I looking at?

  2. Why should I care?

  3. What do I do next?

...then you're not advertising. You’re just making noise.

Selling Without Friction Means Thinking Like a Buyer

When someone sees your ad, their brain is running at full speed: "Is this for me? Do I trust this guy? What do I do now?"

So your job is to make it ridiculously easy for them to:

  • Understand the benefit

  • Trust you can deliver

  • Take the next step

That means:

  • Say what the problem was ("This floor had salt damage and cracks from 20 winters of abuse")

  • Show the process in a simple, logical sequence (with captions, not club music)

  • Give them a reason to call you ("Want your garage to look like this? Click for a quote")

This isn’t rocket science. It’s empathy and execution.

Real Ads Tell Real Stories

[SPOILER ALERT] You’re not going to win a Grammy for Best Floor Coating Ad Short. But you might just win a new customer if you:

  1. Focus on clarity over cleverness
  2. Use words people actually understand
  3. Help them see themselves in your story

You Don’t Need Hype. You Need a System.
