google ads mistake

I recently decided to do a little experiment...

I’ve been thinking about getting my garage floor coated, but as fate would have it, my garage is currently full of storage from a friend who’s moving. Not exactly the best time for a quote, but I figured I’d still reach out and ask some questions.

On Sept 2nd, I did a Google search for “epoxy garage floor near me” and clicked on all six of the paid ads that popped up. I submitted a request for more information to each one, making it clear that I wasn’t ready for a site visit just yet due to my storage situation. I also had some questions about epoxy vs. polyaspartic, pricing, and the differences in floor prep methods.

What happened next was surprising—and not in a good way.

The Story of 6 Epoxy Companies

And Their "Let's Throw $$$ In The Trash" Mistake)

Here’s a breakdown of the responses I received from these companies:

1️⃣ Company #1: Called me within a few hours and gave me a ballpark price of $7 per square foot. It was a brief conversation, and while I appreciated the quick contact, they’ve been MIA ever since. No follow-up, no emails, nothing. 🛑

2️⃣ Company #2: They sent me an email at 7:20 AM the next morning (props for being an early riser). I replied with some follow-up questions, and they called me shortly after. But after that call, radio silence. No follow-up after they answered my initial questions. 🤷‍♂️

3️⃣ Company #3: Sent a courteous email the next morning at 6:26 AM. When I explained that I wasn’t ready for a site visit yet, the owner followed up with an incredibly detailed email about epoxy vs. polyaspartic, floor prep techniques, and why people give conflicting advice. It was great—this guy knew his stuff. But even he didn’t follow up after that. 😬

4️⃣ Company #4: This one sent an automated email almost immediately, with a bunch of info about their polyurea coating and a video explaining their process. It was solid and informative, but again, no human follow-up. After the first email, they vanished. 👻

5️⃣ Company #5: They reached out the next day with pricing at $6 per square foot and offered to send a tech with color samples. But like the others, they didn’t follow up after that initial email. 😶

6️⃣ Company #6: Well, this one didn’t contact me at all. Not even an automated response. Crickets. 🦗

The Common (and Costly) Mistake: No Follow-Up

Now, these companies are spending real money on Google ads. That’s not cheap, especially in a competitive market like garage floor coatings. And yet, not one of them had a solid follow-up process in place.

Think about it: These companies are paying for leads, but when they get a bite, they just… let it slip away. That’s like paying for a billboard and then pulling it down after a day because no one called immediately. 🤑

I wasn’t asking for much—just a simple follow-up, a little nurturing. A check-in would have been enough to keep me interested and engaged. Instead, these companies missed out on an easy opportunity to build trust and move me closer to making a decision.

If you’re running a coatings business (or any service-based business, really), you need to understand this:

Your paid ads are only as good as your follow-up.

If you don’t nurture your leads, you’re just burning money.

The Solution: Follow Up Like a Pro

This isn’t rocket science, but it is crucial. I’ve helped businesses 10X their revenue in just 39 months, and a big part of that success comes down to having a rock-solid follow-up system. You don’t need to be pushy, but you do need to stay on your prospect’s radar.

Here’s the solution I recommend:

1️⃣ Have a Follow-Up Plan: When someone inquires, don’t just respond once and hope for the best. Send a follow-up email after 24-48 hours if they haven’t responded. Call them in a few days to check in. Nurture the relationship, and make sure they don’t forget you.

2️⃣ Use Automation: Tools like email drip campaigns can help you stay top-of-mind without overwhelming you. When someone fills out your inquiry form, set up automated follow-ups that educate them, answer common questions, and keep the conversation going.

3️⃣ Provide Value: Each touchpoint should offer something useful—whether it’s answering a question, sharing a tip, or providing more information about your services. The more value you offer, the more likely they’ll see you as an expert.

4️⃣ Be Patient, But Persistent: Don’t assume that just because they haven’t booked an appointment right away, they’re not interested. Often, prospects need time to think things over. Your job is to gently nudge them along the decision-making process without being overbearing.

5️⃣ Close the Loop: At some point, it’s time to ask for the sale. Once you’ve built trust and answered their questions, invite them to take the next step—whether that’s a quote, a consultation, or a site visit.

Why This Matters (And What’s at Stake)

Here’s the truth: Most people won’t make a decision right away. They need to do their research, think things over, and weigh their options. But if you don’t follow up, someone else will swoop in and get the sale. 💸

The coatings industry is full of competition, and customers are bombarded with choices. If you’re not the one staying in touch and offering value, your competitors will be. And when they do, they’ll be the ones to close the deal, even if they weren’t the first company contacted.

Imagine losing out on thousands of dollars in business because you didn’t take the extra step of sending a follow-up email. Or worse, imagine your competitors thriving while you struggle to make ends meet, simply because they have a better follow-up process. 😰

The Next Step: Let’s Discuss Your Needs
